******Cabin Home In Winter

While working on a government survey in the latter half of the 19th century, Andrew Jackson Steward found himself captivated by the pristine beauty of the timpanogos wilderness.  At his urgence, the family filed homestead claims which eventually led to a thriving sheep farming community that occupied most of North Fork Canyon.   The sheltered highland valley between the towering peaks became known as Stewart Flat - a lush wildflower laced meadow of meandering creeks and crystal clear springs.  Prime building lots were carved out of the original grants and deeded to Stewart's grandchildren for summer homes.   For his one room cottage, grandson Ray Stewart selected a site bounded by two merging streams.  By the summer of 1935, the little cabin was ready for occupancy, but it would soon be called upon to serve as a winter abode as well.  Ray had been pondering whether the steep grazing land could be put to better use.  In 1944 he rigged up a rope tow powered by a truck engine, and called the operation "Timphaven."  Popularity as a family ski area grew, and the business expanded.  By the mid 1960's two chair lifts had been added.  In 1969 Robert Redford purchased the Timphaven ski facility together with most of the Stewart Family Homestead and renamed it "Sundance"

The original ski lifts and rope tow were eventually replaced with a new "hi-speed" quad, christened "Ray's Lift" in honor of the founder.  As for the one room cottage, it has long since given way to a picturesque three bedroom Log Home.  Come visit us where the creeks meet.
